We are launching our ‘SIG Sauer Week’ series with a SIG P226 AL SO that was manufactured by Sig Sauer GmbH in its Eckernförde factory, Germany. The P226 has an incredible service history. Read on for another LSB journey in firearms history…

In 1975, the Swiss company Schweizerische Industrie Gesellschaft (SIG) entered into an agreement with German firearms manufacturer J.P. Sauer & Sohn to develop and market a new handgun for the defence and law enforcement market. The result was the SIG Sauer P220, which was a refinement of the earlier, Swiss made P210. The P210, which remains one of the finest service pistols ever made, was a Petter-Browning design first produced by the French prior to WWII as the 7.65mm L Pistolet modèle 1935A.  The German Wehrmacht adopted the pistol as the Pistole 625(f).

Following WWII, Petter returned to his Swiss homeland where SIG produced his design as the P210 in 9x19mm Para.  The locked breech design of the P226 was pioneered by SIG Sauer.

The P226 was the first SIG Sauer handgun to be sold in the U.S., initially by Browning as the ‘BDA’. It was entered into the U.S. XM9 Service Pistol Trials that were held by the US Army in 1984 on behalf of the US armed forces to find a replacement for the M1911A1. The two finalists were the Beretta 92SBF and the SIG P226, but Beretta offered a lower total package price and got the U.S. contract. However, the Navy SEALs, chose to adopt the P226 as the P226 MK25 with special corrosion protection.

SIG Sauer eventually founded SIGARMS, Inc. (now SIG Sauer) in the United States to handle importation of their products. In 2000, SIG Holding AG sold J.P. Sauer & Sohn GmbH to two German businessmen. The P226 has since been produced in the U.S. in several versions while the German factory stopped producing it recently.

The P226 is a tried and tested service pistol combining functionality, safety, carrying comfort, and maximum precision. The grip is made of robust, high-strength aluminium. The version that we are offering today is the AL SO variant which also includes a rail under the slide. The durability, reliability and finish of this German-made pistol is appreciated by firearm connoisseurs the world over.
