Our second post in the ‘SIG Sauer Week’ series is a SIG 516 Patrol rile, which is one of the most advanced and reliable AR platforms available on the market. This example was manufactured in the Newington plant in the U.S. and supplied through SIG Sauer GmbH in Eckernförde, Germany. Read on for another LSB journey in firearms history…

SIG SAUER introduced the 516 at the 2010 SHOT Show, probably as a direct counterpart to the HK416. It is said that the one of the designers of the 516 was a former H&K employee who played a key role in the development of the HK416. The name chosen for SIG’s rifle, “SIG 516”, appears to reinforce this view. Whatever the case, SIG did go one better than the HK416, which at the time of its introduction was the most refined AR on the market.

The SIG 516 is part of a line of rifles with varying configurations which are versatile enough to penetrate the defence, law enforcement, and commercial markets. These rifles utilise a gas-piston system with a 3-position gas regulator. They employ a piston to reset the bolt as opposed to the direct-impingement (DI) method that vents much of the gas into the bolt chamber to reset it. This presents an obvious advantage over traditional DI AR rifles, which are prone to foul the bolt-carrier area and cause failures if the gun is not kept reasonably clean.

The SIG 516 has a free-floating, aluminium quad rail handguard with four M1913 Picatinny rails. The barrels is chrome-lined and cold-hammer forged with a Nitride finish for extreme durability and corrosion resistance. The muzzle is threaded with a standard (0.5x28TPI) pattern to accommodate a wide variety of flash suppressors, muzzle brakes and suppressors. The lower is machined from a 7075-T6 aircraft-grade aluminium, just like the upper. The upper and lower feature a black, hard-coat anodized finish. Flip-up iron sights are included in the package.

SIG added a few nice features to the Patrol Rifle. Firstly, the lower has a couple of pressure buttons under the two takedown pins. These are spring loaded and apply upwards pressure against the takedown pins. This ensures that there is no slack whatsoever between the upper and lower components. Secondly, SIG provided multiple connection points for slings so that you may attach one-, two-, or three-point slings with push-button release connectors. Thirdly,

SIG designed the bolt carrier group themselves, choosing to make it an integral part of the bolt carrier group rather than simply riveting it on, a must for pistol-driven AR rifles.
