This evening’s post, which is the fourth one in this week’s ‘Postwar SMG’ series, is a highlight of our daily posts, as we are bringing you an iconic and desirable German firearm that is extremely hard to get in this configuration: an original Heckler & Koch MP5, one of a small batch made in Oberndorf in 1986. Read on for another LSB journey in firearms history…

The Heckler & Koch firm had been founded in Oberndorf in 1948 by ex-Mauser employees, Edmund Heckler and Theodor Koch, who were later joined by Alex Seidel. The company’s success started with the production of the G3 rifle for the Bundeswehr, which as we have seen in an earlier post on the StG 45(M), was derived from the research carried out by Mauser in the closing months of WWII.

Encouraged by the success of the G3 rifle, H&K developed a family of small arms consisting of four types of firearms all based on a common G3 design layout and operating principle. The first type was chambered for 7.62x51mm NATO, the second for the 7.62x39mm M43 round, the third for the intermediate 5.56x45mm NATO calibre, and the fourth type for the 9x19mm Parabellum pistol cartridge. The MP5 was created within the fourth group of firearms and was initially known as the HK54.

Work on HK’s first machine pistol began in 1964 and two years later it was adopted by the German Federal Police, border guard and army special forces under the designation ‘MP64’, which was later changed to ‘MP5’. Later improvements and variants received new designations, such as ‘MP5A1’ (late 1960’s), ‘MP5A2’ and ‘MP5A3’ (1970), ‘MP5SD’ (suppressed version, 1974) and MP5K (compact version, 1976). There was also a dedicated semi-automatic version, known as the MP5 SF, that was produced in small quantities. However, there were many sub-variations resulting from particular requests by defence clients across the world.

The variant that we are offering you today is part of a batch of HK MP5 firearms in several variations that were produced by Heckler & Koch in Germany around 1986 in response to an official request. Most of these firearms were supplied as semi-automatic while a few were selective fire. We were fortunate in acquiring a small quantity of these semi-automatic MP5s on an exclusive basis.

Our guns are original factory-produced semi-automatic, not later conversions from automatics. Externally, the trigger group housing has three lever positions for ‘safe’, ‘single shot’ and ‘auto’. However, the internal mechanism is solely for ‘safe’ or ‘single shot’. Consequently, these firearms fall under Category B or the EU Firearms Directive and Schedule II of the Arms Act 2006 and may be sold to licensed target shooters and collectors in Malta.

We shall be offering two types of these HK MP5, one with a retractable stock and another with a fixed one. Both come as a package that includes two magazines and the original HK Manual. You have a choice of 30-round or 15-round magazines, depending on whether who you have the standard or Special licences. The model with the retractable stock is defined as a ‘short firearm’ under the Arms Act. Hence, a TSL-A Special is only required if it is purchased with the 30-round magazine.

These HK MP5 are in lightly used but in very good to excellent condition. The receiver and trigger groups have the same serial number. They are complete with a removable sticker on the left side of the trigger group denoting ‘Action 3’ or ‘Action NP’ RUAG 9x19 Para ammunition.

If you are interested in acquiring one of these HK MP5s, act now and call or email us to book one before they are sold prior to their arrival in September. If you pre-order, you will also be offered more accessories on a first-come, first-served basis and, on arrival of the consignment, you will be in queue to choose your MP5 in the same order that you placed your booking.
